Lessons

Lessons are designed to support your discovery process in music through lines of questioning and creating learning experiences that activate new understandings of musical material. I am continually studying about how to play woodwind instruments and learning about variables in reed making, technique, and what it means to be a musician today. To share this experience and give forward what my own teachers have given me is a joy.

Working with my students intrinsic curiosities or motivations, I introduce musical material at a unique pace tailored to each person. My approach to learning has been transformed by study of the procedures of the Alexander Technique and the work of various successful thinkers in behavioral neuroscience, Feldenkrais method, and a close look at what has created the success of various musicians and other artists I admire. I write occasionally about these learnings, and have recently published on unlearning the stressful notion of correctness as it limits our innate curiosity in the IDRS journal: “Curiosity and Correctness: An Alexander Technique Informed Approach to Greater Learner Satisfaction.”

I teach privately in Brooklyn, or online and am currently on faculty at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and as adjunct lecturer at CUNY CityTech College. My rate for private lessons is $80 an hour.

Some words from my students:

“Christopher is a very professional and patient instructor for my young bassoonist. He his highly knowledgeable about all aspects of playing the bassoon and teaches posture, hand and instrument positioning, along with theory and musicality. Christopher clearly cares about his students and invests in getting to know them as musicians and people.”

“Chris is a wonderful teacher! I had a couple of lessons with him to prepare for my grad school auditions and he provided me with the feedback I needed in a supportive style. Even though I was only able to have a couple of lessons, they were quite meaningful and I would definitely recommend him. He has great energy and is quite knowledgeable.”
